The Hunter-Gatherer Lifestyle.

There is a growing global trend within the area of anthropological nutrition, that focuses on the eating habits of early humans rather than studying the current physiology of modern man. This makes more sense, as you would agree that success leaves clues and humans have been incredibly successful at adaptation and survival up until this point. If success leaves clues then it makes NO SENSE to study the modern man, as westernised populations are the most chronically ill, infertile and physically disabled humans to walk the earth. There is no point in constantly measuring physiology or sequencing genes as they have remained constant for over 40 000 years, so what point does it serve to be looking at the blueprint, when it’s the change of building materials (food, exercise etc) that are causing the problem. Many people are fooled into believing that advances within medicine and technology have equalled improvements within health and vitality which is far from the reality that is facing modern man.

There are estimates that 80% of chronic illness and mortality is due to lifestyle choices (1) which would mean that we are actually choosing our demise through our day to day actions. There are two choices you can make with your food decisions… you can either eat something that is genetically congruent to your body or something that will damage your body. You can either sit on the couch, after you sat all day at work or you can exercise and get adjusted. You can smoke, take drugs (legal or illegal), you can drink alcohol, caffeine and soft drink.  These are all choices. Potentially deadly ones.

It would be ridiculous to presume that your lifestyle choices (food, exercise, thinking patterns) are NOT involved in disease, yet our guidelines in nutrition have remained the same despite the increasing illness rates. We know that westernised diets include nearly 70% of cereals, margarine, oils, refined sugars and dairy products (2) and we know 80% of us are slowly perishing with preventable disease… so perhaps it is time to part from the sickly and overweight herd.

MoooSo what can you do? It is time to change your diet back to a more “Paleo-lithic” style of eating, which consists mainly of lean meats, vegetables, fruits and a small amount of nuts. Look at your diet now…. Are you eating cereal or toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta for dinner? This means that you are actually just eating three different forms of grains!!! Grains are not considered nutrient dense, they are however calorie dense, which is not an ideal combination. Currently, western diets compose of 51.8% carbohydrate (grains)(2) and currently Australia is the fattest country on earth (3)… so it is definitely time to ditch the high calorie and low nutrient foods! The Basics of Health

If you believe the media, health is something that’s hard to find, hard to achieve and is very expensive to develop and maintain. It’s complicated, it’s confusing, and if you want to understand it completely you need to spend years in a University institution.

Luckily for you, we here at the Vitality Hackers know this to be rubbish.

Health is not something that is hard to find, difficult to understand or very expensive to maintain. In fact, for the most part the only knowledge you need to possess is the intelligence you were born with. Innate Intelligence is a concept that Chiropractors like myself and Dr Hannah base all our health decisions around, and is basically a name for the concept that our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Chiropractors are the only practitioners who work within this paradigm, the founders of Chiropractic just created a name for it. In short what it means is that our bodies know how to be healthy, and in fact every physiological process that our body undertakes is in one shape or form an attempt to make us healthier. Yes, you are understanding correctly, your body knows what to do to be healthy, all you need to do is give it what it needs to be healthy.

There are four main areas that need to addressed to allow our bodies to express their innate potential for good health; Food, Exercise, Thoughts and Nerve System function.

When it comes to food the best approach is always asking yourself “is this how the food looked in nature?” the further away from the foods natural state, how processed it is, the worse it is for you. This is something that we will be going into quite a lot of depth about on the Vitality Hackers, and both Jabe and Hannah have a quite a lot of in depth knowledge to share.

Exercise again is quite a simple one, make sure you move and move often. Changing intensity from time to time is also great, but the real key here is consistency of exercise. Humans are designed to be mobile, in fact sitting any more than 2 hours a day is genetically incongruent for us!

Healthy thoughts really come down to having good strategies for dealing with the stressful parts of life. There’s no panacea here, what is really important though is understanding how you as an individual react to stress and what healthy approach works for you. Of course this is something that we’ll be covering in VH episodes as well.

The last one, optimal Nervous System function, may seem a little obscure and new, however it is most definitely a requirement for great health. Your Nervous System is the master controller of your body and directly or indirectly controls every function that occurs within your body, therefore it’s essential that it’s working as well as it can be, so you can make the most of the other three requirements for great health.

In short, finding Health is not a complicated and difficult process, it’s about listening to your body and fulfilling it’s needs. Keep tuning in to our episodes for more detailed info on how to fulfil your requirements, but as long as you are conscious of your needs when making health choices you can’t really go wrong.
